Someone once told me that silk is
the fabric you wear when you talk
to God. That makes it a very special
painting surface, whether it for is a
wall hanging, art quilt or scarf. The
softness and liquidity of the silk-
painting process is very different from
working on canvas. The dyes have
a mind of their own. Once the brush
touches the silk, I am committed.
There is no backtracking.
A native of Jamaica transplanted to the
prairie, Phillippa Lack has been painting
on silk for over 20 years. More general
fiberarts work have been a recent
addition to her repertoire, and she is
enjoying the freedom of collage and
mixed media compositions.
Recently, returning to her childhood
teachings, she is creating handpainted
silk landscape collages combined with
silk ribbon embroidery to further extend
her reach into the medium. She works
from photographs or sketches made of
real, or imaginary, scenes. She chooses
her fabrics from those she’s painted, and
sometimes use commercial materials.
Unexpected found objects play a part, too.
