GAYNOR COOKE NELSON

Artist Statement:
Gaynor Cooke Nelson, a resident of Longmont, Colorado, is a classical realist painter in oil whose portrait, still life and landscape works appear in public and private collections throughout the United States.

Trained in the classical realist tradition, Gaynor began her studies in Atlanta, Georgia under the direction of master colorist Nance Honea. The foundation of her painting technique is the creation of an under-painting – “grisaille” – which establishes composition and values. The grisaille provides the cohesive glue holding everything together in the composition. The painting technique is further enhanced by the application of multiple layers of oil color and glazes, rendering a luminescent quality to the images on the canvas.

Active participation in the art’s community has been important to Gaynor. Her works were accepted into numerous juried exhibitions. She was a founding member of The Portrait Society of America. Gaynor has been recognized as a Member of Merit of The Portrait Society of Atlanta, the oldest portrait art organization in America, where she served four years on the board of directors. Gaynor was recognized in 2001 with an interview article feature in FOLIO magazine, The Portrait Society of Atlanta’s quarterly portraiture magazine. Gaynor has been active member of the Longmont Studio Tour core planning committee which is part of the Longmont Council for the Arts. She is also a member of the Boulder County Arts Alliance.
